Handmade Process
Handmade jewellery is made from scratch, from raw materials, such as precious metal grain, bars, wire and sheet. It is then worked by hand, using age old goldsmithing techniques and traditional hand tools, to make a unique piece where no two pieces are exactly the same.
Handmade rings that has been made from scratch, are generally stronger and will outlive a mass produced cast ring. As metals are rolled, hammered and pulled, they become compressed, eliminating bubbles and weak spots present in cast jewellery. As a handmade engagement ring is individually made by a Goldsmith, every
ring will be completely unique
Not all. You may see other companies advertising jewellery as ‘handmade’ which has been cast in hundreds or thousands in a mould or made using cast components. Jewellery described as 'handmade' may refer only to finishing touches, polishing or setting by hand, not to how the piece was made. The distinction matters, and it is rarely explained to the customer.
Cast jewellery is made by pouring molten metal into a mould. Normally, each design of such jewellery is mass produced in 100’s or 1000’s in large industrial casting houses, without much consideration to quality or uniqueness. Terms such as handcrafted, hand finished, often indicate cast rings. Handmade can only be used when the product has been truly handmade.
Although we do use some automation in our work, such as an electric jeweller’s drill or a polishing motor, most of the work is done using traditional hand tools.
This depends on the complexity of the design and availability of the materials. Providing, all metals and gemstones are present a more complex ring design with many elements (i.e. multiple settings, complex shanks etc.), may take several days to complete. This is why you pay a little more for handmade rings as we can’t produce hundreds per day, like a cast made ring.
Bespoke and Made to Order
We are more than happy to discuss any ideas you may have. Please browse our collections to establish whether our jewellery style matches your idea. Also, if you have any of your own drawings/photos, please send them over.
We would be more than happy to listen to your ideas via email or a telephone call. Generally, we prefer communicating via email, as this allows all ideas and suggestions to be written down for future use.
As we are an ethical jewellery company we do not copy other jewellers’ work, as it is illegal as well as immoral. However, we may already have a design in our past or present catalogues that may interest you. Please see our gallery of previous custom orders here.
Absolutely. Get in touch with a sketch or photo and we will try our best to bring the pattern to life.
Unfortunately, we do not work with customers own stones and only set stones sourced by Lilia Nash, from trusted gemstone suppliers.
Although we can recycle your old jewellery to make a new ring, each commission is considered on a case by case basis. We can only accept 18ct gold British hallmarked non stone set rings for such commissions. We do not accept platinum rings or rings set with stones. Additional terms and conditions apply.
We have a wide range of sapphires in stock, in a rainbow of different colours! In the unlikely event that we do not have a suitable stone in stock, we would be happy to source a sapphire for you, to be set into one of our ring designs.
The bespoke design service itself is free of charge, as we love hearing your ideas and suggestions. The quote for a bespoke/custom made ring will depend on the type of precious metal used and size/quality of the gemstone/s
and intricacy of the design. We will provide you with a written quote, which is valid up to 14 days from receiving the quote. If you order during this time, you will not be charged any more than the written quote. We ask for a 50%
payment to make the ring, with the final 50% payable when the ring has been handmade and hallmarked, usually 8-10 weeks from order.
Absolutely! You can book an appointment at our Calstock (Cornwall) boutique using our online booking app. During an appointment, we will show you current ring designs and loose gemstones, as well as measuring your finger. We love exchanging ideas and recommendations with our customers, in order to bring their dream ring to life. We can also recommend some of the beautiful places to visit or eat in Devon and Cornwall, if you are not local to the area.
Sizing
Although we are happy to accept sizes provided by other jewellers or by using finger measuring tools/kits available online, we do recommend using our own sizing gauge to confirm your finger size. There can be slight variation in the sizes between jewellers, as different brands of sizing equipment can give slightly different results.
We've prepared a blog on the most common questions and issues in finding out your partner's ring size, without ruining the surprise! Please see how to buy an engagement ring that fits
All our non-sale ready to wear engagement rings can be resized free of charge, within the size parameters listed in individual listings, within 30 calendar days of receipt. After this period, there would be a small charge, plus return postage, to reduce the rings size and increase by half a size. To enlarge the ring size by more than half a size, the charge would be calculated depending on the size required. If a ring was purchased at a sale price, any future resizing would be a chargeable service.
It is possible to resize a custom made/bespoke engagement ring by a couple of sizes up or down, however it is best to get the size right the first time, should the ring require resizing in the future. Resizing of a custom made/bespoke engagement ring is a paid service and would depend on the size required.
Yes, as all our work is performed in-house, we can resize and retexture any gold or platinum wedding rings. Any texture can be reapplied seamlessly on a resized ring – hammered, matte or another texture from our collection.
Generally, it is not a good idea to resize engraved bands as the pattern may not match up at the back of the ring. It may be possible to gently stretch the band by half a size, without causing damage to the engraving. If you are concerned about future resizing of your wedding band we recommend engraving the pattern two-thirds of the way around the band, leaving a small gap at the back for resizing purposes.

Due to the high volatility of precious metal and gemstone markets, we cannot hold the price for more than two weeks of the customer receiving the quote. After two weeks have passed we can provide an updated quote, based on the current market price.

Ethics and Sustainability
Recycled gold/platinum is obtained by processing and purifying old jewellery and precious metal scraps and making it into a new alloy ready to be used in your rings. Please read more here.
No, recycled precious metals have the same strength as mined metals. By going through the recycling process, all impurities that would make metal weak are removed, and you’re left with pure metal (gold or platinum) that gets alloyed with other metals to achieve desired purity
We stick to honest and completely transparent business practices. We have high moral principles, treat everyone equally and with high respect. Unlike many of our so call ethical rivals, we don’t plagiarise other designer’s techniques, designs and even literature. We don’t greenwash our customers or make dishonest statements, such as advertising cast made rings as handmade.
Being huge nature advocates, we aim to do all we can to reduce our impact on the environment. We strive to reduce the damage to our planet, by only using suppliers that are completely transparent in their practices; those who share the same values as us. We use completely plastic free packaging, and only use 100% recycled metals. Our gemstones are sourced from traceable origins and our lab grown diamonds are carbon neutral.
Our hand-made jewellery making techniques are an age old craft, without use of heavy modern machinery. We are proud that our jewellery is as eco-friendly as possible and we are always trying to find new ways to run our
business in a more responsible way, that is ethical and sustainable. We support charities that protect our planet and endeavour to bring change to the jewellery industry, so you can celebrate special moments in your life with a
clear conscience.
Most of our natural mined diamonds are fair trade mined and cut in Canada by CanadaMark. Other diamonds are conflict free and obtained from reputable suppliers than conform to the Kimberly Process.
General
18ct gold has 75% pure gold with 25% of other metals (primarily silver and copper), 9ct gold has 37.5% pure gold with 62.5% other metals (such as silver, copper and zinc).
We only use genuine solid precious metals in all our jewellery: 9ct gold, 18ct gold and 950 platinum. Such metals are obtained from accredited suppliers in the UK and the USA. All our rings are hallmarked by the Birmingham Assay Office (BAO) and bear the mark of the metal purity (375 for 9ct gold, 750 for 18ct gold, 950 for platinum) as well as other marks, such as the maker mark (LN) and BAO mark (anchor).
Wearing different metals together or different carats of gold together may lead to the damage by wearing the rings out. This is because different metals (i.e. gold and platinum) and different carats (9ct, 14ct, 18ct) have different hardness, therefore a harder metal will rub on the softer metal and wear it out.
All our larger natural and lab grown diamonds are certified by GIA or IGI laboratories. These laboratories are the authorities for diamond certifications. Our sapphires larger than 1.5ct are certified by the Birmingham Assay office gemstone lab, one of UK leading gemstone laboratories working by the GIA principles. Sapphires under 1.5ct can be certified on request of the customer for a fee.
