The Beauty of Sapphires

The Beauty of Sapphires

Did you know that Sapphires were the gem of choice for engagement rings way before Diamonds gained their popularity?  In fact, Sapphire engagement rings date right back to ancient Rome, used to signify a commitment. By the 14th and 15th centuries, sapphires were favoured among royalty and wealthy families for their symbolism of love and fidelity.

Sapphires are pretty durable, being the second hardest gemstone (after diamonds).  They also have very notable royal connections featuring in Queen Victoria’s Engagement ring as well as Princess Diana’s iconic ring, now worn by The Princess of Wales. Rings like these have once again helped to elevate the profile of the Sapphire!

Sapphires also have a deep emotional significance and are associated with Fidelity, Trust and Sincerity, with Blue Sapphires specifically symbolising loyalty and faithfulness.

But did you know that Sapphires aren’t just blue?  You can find them in a whole array of colours from Green, Purple, Yellow, Pink and even White! The only colour you won’t find Sapphires in is Red, as that’s a Ruby!

It’s really important to understand the description of a Sapphire.  If it is described as natural and unheated, this means that the stunning colour you are seeing has been formed naturally and the gemstone has not gone through any process to enhance the colour.  These sapphires are much rarer and have a higher value and will feature natural colour variation and inclusions making them even more unique.

Heat treated sapphires have gone through a process to enhance the colour making the stone brighter, more uniform colour and can lower the perception of natural inclusions. It is important to note that the majority of sapphires (around 98%) are actually heated, and overall value of a gem is dependent on many factors.

Here at Lilia Nash, we specialise in Sapphire rings and over the years have created some beautiful pieces.  We have found green sapphires to be the most popular colour and some of our clients prefer the more unusual colour shades that sapphires are found in.

You can also create your own unique engagement ring by choosing your own sapphire to be set into a Lilia Nash ring. We have a vast collection of gemstones in a variety of shapes and colours, although we do specialise in Australian fair trade sapphires in greens, blues or yellows, or beautiful Parti sapphires, which are a mixture of all three colours in one stone - all 100% natural, as nature intended.
